Placement of lights on presidential debate lecterns creates angry exchange

CORAL GABLES, Fla The presidential debates are several hours away, and already there's been an angry exchange.

The Associated Press has learned the Kerry campaign is taking issue with the lights that will signal when a speaker's time has expired.

The lights are on the lecterns. Kerry aides say they're too distracting there, so they should be moved.

But the Commission on Presidential Debates has refused. The commission wants both the television and auditorium audiences to see them -- which is something both campaigns agreed to.

Still, the Kerry camp wants them moved to a less distracting location.

So, Kerry advisers are threatening to remove the lights when they visit the site with Kerry later today. As one Kerry aide put it, "We'll bring a screwdriver."
